Anthology Review: Street Magicks ed. by Paula Guran

Street MagicksStreet Magicks by Paula Guran
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Reasonably inferred from the cover and title, this anthology contains a fair amount of urban fantasy in its menagerie of magical environments. However, it also explores other-realm magic and even absurdist magic. Some have clear rules to their magic with established routes of learning and perfecting, and others show landscapes subtly and conspicuously imbued with magic.

My favorites of the collection are each 5-star inclusions. Jim Butcher’s “Last Call” presents a stand-alone glimpse of his modern day Chicago wizard-detective, Harry Dresden, in the noir style. Charles de Lint’s “Freewheeling” beautifully portrays the magical world-view of a Spectrum-like street kid. San Francisco gets star-treatment in Ellen Klages’ heartbreaking “Caligo Lane” in which a cartographer uses her magic in an attempt to save war victims. Finally, Scott Lynch’s novella, A Year and a Day in Old Theradane, shows a fantasy world dripping with magic and the rogues trying to make a dishonest living among the fallout.

I’ve reviewed all of the included stories on my blog. They are:
